We are thrilled to announce the joint winners of the prestigious 2024 Jubilee Award: Ben Barraclough and Finley Corke.
This year’s decision was an extraordinary one, as the judges faced an unprecedented challenge. After two rounds of tie-break votes and still being unable to separate these two outstanding individuals, the judges unanimously agreed to declare them joint winners.
The panel of judges—Mayor Dawn Payne, Councillor Kazia Knight, Rev. Matthew Peat, Townsperson of the Year 2025 Mark Barrow, and Capt. Yvonne West of the Salvation Army—praised both winners for their remarkable contributions to the community.
Ben Barraclough: A True Community Hero
At just 19 years old, Ben Barraclough of Kirk Deighton Juniors FC showed extraordinary initiative and compassion. After his team coach was diagnosed with cancer, Ben rallied his teammates to organise a fundraising football match. His efforts not only brought the community together but also raised many thousands of pounds for Maggie’s Cancer Centre, an achievement that captured the attention of the media and was even televised.
Finley Corke: A Courageous Young Lifesaver
At just 7 years old, Finley Corke displayed incredible bravery and quick thinking in a moment of crisis. When his father suffered a serious fall and was immobile, Finley overcame his own quiet and shy nature to take decisive action. He retrieved his father’s phone and sought help from their neighbours, ensuring his father received the care he urgently needed.
Words from Mayor Dawn Payne
“Both Ben and Finley exemplify the very best of our community spirit,” said Mayor Dawn Payne. “Ben’s initiative and determination to support his coach and raise vital funds show a level of maturity and kindness that is truly inspiring. Finley, at such a young age, demonstrated incredible courage and presence of mind to act swiftly during an emergency, saving his father from further harm. Both are extraordinary individuals, and their stories remind us of the power of compassion and resilience.”
We are honoured to recognise Ben Barraclough and Finley Corke as this year’s Jubilee Award winners. Their stories inspire us all to be more courageous, compassionate, and community-minded.
Congratulations to both Ben and Finley for their incredible achievements!
