Leeds City Council has introduced an innovative scheme to help communities monitor and address speeding concerns in their neighbourhoods. The initiative allows recognised community groups, including tenant or resident associations and parish or town councils, to borrow a Speed Indication Device (SID) for a week at a time.
The SID displays the speed of oncoming vehicles, encouraging safer driving by showing a smiley face for those adhering to the speed limit and a frowning face for those exceeding it. The device can be used in multiple locations within the borrowing period to identify areas of concern.
Councillor Jonathan Pryor, Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport & Sustainable Development, emphasised that training and resources will be provided to ensure effective use of the equipment.
Interested groups can contact road.safety@leeds.gov.uk to request a loan of the SID. This scheme is part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety and engage communities in proactive solutions.
