We’re pleased to share an update on the upcoming restoration of the Wetherby Cemetery gates, which were damaged in a road traffic collision last year.
Following the competitive tender process we have appointed Historic Property Restoration Ltd to carry out the repairs and met with them last week to finalise plans for the works. Historic Property Restoration Ltd have carried out other works in the cemetery and around the town’s green spaces, so we’re confident that they’ll do a good job on this project too.
Restoration of Gates
The metal gates will be removed shortly and sent to a specialist in Bedale for refurbishment. Salvageable parts will be repaired, and damaged sections will be sympathetically restored to preserve their character.
Stonework Repairs
The largest stone pieces, including the decorative topper on the right-hand column, will be safely relocated for minor cosmetic repairs. However, the left-hand column will need full replacement due to a fracture. A new column, designed to match the original detail, is being sourced using advanced etching techniques.
Wall Reconstruction
The damaged section of the wall will be rebuilt using the original stone where possible, fitting the pieces back together like a puzzle. Additional stone, if needed, may come from pieces salvaged from other local projects.
Additional Repairs
The water tap stone housing behind the wall will be assessed and repaired, and the stability of the new column will be ensured with a suitable structural solution.
Timescales & Next Steps
Initial works, including tidying the area and removing the gates, are expected to begin in the next couple of weeks. Further updates will be shared as work progresses.
Minimising Disruption
A small onsite unit for tools and welfare facilities will be set up without obstructing cemetery access. The contractors have been reminded to be respectful during burials.
